BCC: Delivering Simple Pleasures In Beautiful Setting

The Boulder Country Club prides itself on delivering a wonderful product, in an unmatched setting at a value price to its members first and foremost.   The Boulder Country Club is a non profit business. That is, the club is organized for pleasure and recreation for the benefit of its members and in regards to Federal taxes.

As a non member who has visited on occasion for business and social functions, I can truly say the BCC is a fantastic facility.

About Press Maxwell Golf Courses

J Press Maxwell was part of the Greatest Generation, flying over eighty combat missions in the skies of World War II.   Following the war he rejoined his father, then a well respected golf course designer.

By 1960 Press was  president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects and recognized as one of the pre-eminent designers of the age. James designed or remodeled over twenty Colorado courses during his career.  He was named to the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame in 1996.  Beyond Colorado, James Press Maxwell has had a hand in countless top national courses around the country.

The Championship 18 Hole Golf Course

Press Maxwell designed a beautiful course that stands the test of time.  The BCC 18-hole Championship Course opened way back in 1963. It measures 7002 yards from the longest tees — though there are a number of boxes to start from.

You can play the course in as few as  5400 yards from the forward tees.  There is a slope rating of 135 and the United States Golf Association gives the course a 73.3 rating.

Boulder enjoys 300 plus days of sunshine and the Flatirons keep down the breeze.  You’ll find gentle bent grass and forgiving winter rye fairways here.

Old World Charm Minutes Away

Step back in time or just while away a little time relaxing at the club.  Upscale dining, fireside chats, a smoothie bar and a bamboo dance floor.  New meets old at this classic embodiment of the Golf Club.  Well stocked shops for golf and tennis apparel are par for the course.  Top notch staff and instructors.  Member owned – this is more about creating a welcome second home than a corporate vibe workout space. Though if you want a workout, there is a cardio fitness center onsite!

BCC Clay Tennis Courts

Boulder Colorado is a tech town.  Through and through, its a community always on the leading edge of breakthrough technology.   So it should’t come as a surprise that the country club in Boulder was an early adopter of the Har-Tru court system.

These courts are better than others in a number of unique ways.   It reduces injury for players at Boulder Country Club because the court allows for sliding.  Unlike most hard surface courts, this system stays cooler in direct sunlight while drying faster after a rain storm.

Its a great system for players seeking to improve their game.  Heck, the balls even bounce slightly slower on Har-Tru courts.

So, like I said, if you are looking for a beautiful combination of technology and tennis – the BCC courts are going to wow you.

The Club’s Flatiron Frolics

A tradition going back to the early Nineteen Fifties still exists at the Boulder Country Club today.  The Flatiron Frolics is part golf tourney and part social event.  As I jot this blog in 2020 in the midst of the unreal Coronavirus pandemic, the BCC has already announced that it would not be hosting the usual social events this year.  Not because of the virus, but due to renovations.  It almost seems clairvoyant on the part of the club.

The event was born out of competitive championship play and to this day inspires friendships and competition both within and without the club.

She’s Going To The Chapel and She’s Going To Get Married

Well, there isn’t really a chapel in sight.  Nor a cell phone.  The BCC has a strict policy on no mobile cell phones.  It makes for  a nice experience to be someplace without everyone looking at a screen or yapping on a phone.

The country club is a great setting for a wedding.   Some of the advantages of getting married here include: ample onsite parking available , in-house dining/catering, flexible layout and elevator access.  .The layout offers nice flow between  the bar, dance floor, and dining spaces.    The renovations taking place in 2020 could have an impact on availability, so check well in advance.

Couples rave online about the perfect marriage of iconic Colorado outdoors and superb all in one service.  With a variety of dining options and a club atmosphere that really lends itself to your Big Day, couples will have plenty of choices for where to tie the knot and then celebrate into the wee hours.  Imagine the afternoon sun, glittering through trees and dancing about in your wedding photos for a lifetime of memories.

Catering to Weddings (but only one on any given day!), Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, corporate meetings, Bridal and baby showers, birthdays and holiday parties, fundraisers and anniversaries.

2020 BCC Renovations and Remodeling

Call it dumb luck, but in the midst of this crazy Covid-19 scare, the BCC is renovating it’s fifty five year old facility.  I say that’s pretty good forecasting – when you make your facility unavailable due to construction and then the world says, “don’t gather in groups of ten or more.”  That means far fewer cancelled events than most facilities across the county are experiencing as we all social distance to get a handle on the pandemic.

In any event, what to expect?  The remodeling project will add around 2,000 square feet to the main clubhouse.

But don’t expect to see a dramatically different structure.  This is more about making some tweaks to the historic structure to open up more square footage while preserving the landmarked Hobart Wagnar design.

Originally built in 1964 (a year before I was born!), the club house consists of six interlocking hexagonal wings.  Total square footage is just shy of 30,000.

I think the club is making the right decision with the updates.  This is a reflection of what we are seeing the Boulder real estate market.  Owners frequently remodel in the interior of their living space – if you don’t move many exterior walls you can really keep your costs down while creating a new vision for your space.

All three club house indoor restaurants are getting a redesign and a brand new building is going up alongside the in ground swimming pool.

What To Expect When Playing 9-18 Holes Of Boulder Golf

This is a lovely older course.  Mature trees provide shade and nice wind breaks, but at the same time, failure to keep your ball on the fairway can be punishing.  The Press Maxwell Championship Course is scenic.  This isn’t the toughest or most highly ranked course in Colorado.  But it is one of the prettiest.  You’ll treat yourself to breathtaking views of the Flatirons and season-dependent you’ll catch peek-a-boo views of the snow-covered Indian Peaks.

There are numerous small lakes (for those coming from The Great Lakes region – more like ponds), plus other creeks and tricky little water hazards.

The course is immaculately maintained.  Greens have quick speed.  The practice facilities at this course fantastic. And the Facebook page is loaded with simple videos offering suggestions to take your game to the next level.   For families, the Par 3 nine hole course is a great way to spend quality family time together.

Back in the day, the tennis instructor might also oversee a sparse onsite gym space.  Those days are long gone.  Boulder Country Club employs a fitness director and offers both indoor and outdoor fitness options.  Many families join for everything else the club offers above and beyond a beautiful private golf course.  There’s even an outdoor artificial turf field for year round training.

Living In Boulder Country Club

There’s the golf club that’s members only and then there is life in the subdivision and general area considered to be a part of the community.  You know, sometimes neighborhoods have a variety of names, but everyone just thinks of it as the same community.  BCC is like that.  For those seeking to make this part of Boulder home, there are a wide variety of options.   Whatever your budget, there are plenty of great areas to call home around the course.

Some communities such as Country Club Greens sound like they must be right next door, but in fact are more of a long walk to the course.

Truth be told, while many families live in the Boulder Country Club neighborhood, there are actually no subdivisions by that name.  Instead, you’ll find all sorts of “Greens.”  Such as:

  • Buckingham Green
  • Fountain Greens
  • Gunbarrel Green
  • Island Greens
  • Little Green Leprechaun – no, that one doesn’t exist, just threw it in for fun!

Country Club Lends Beautiful Backdrop To Luxury Homes

Colorado is actually a semi-arid state, sitting at a cool mile high elevation.   Being right next door to an impeccably maintained verdant golf course is more than a perk of being in the community.  Boulder home owners gain picturesque views through stunning vegetation, all maintained by someone else too boot.  True, some owners need to contend with defensively planting trees and shrubs to curb the errant airmailed golf ball.

On the other hand, neighborhood children can find employment recovering and cleaning golf balls along their backyards and then graduate to numerous positions at the club itself.

Clients Eric and Laura purchased in the Boulder Country Club community for the lifestyle.  They wanted a big yard for the twin boys, easy access to the swim club and golf course and yet minutes to Boulder.  BCC delivers on all cylinders!

This portion of Boulder is really defined by the two courses winding like a giant green ribbon through the heart of Gunbarrel.   And with so much natural beauty, its no surprise architects and designers and builders flock to the neighborhood.  You will find projects of various shapes and sizes.  Older homes that were last renovated in the Sixties and Seventies or suffered from “improvements” in the Eighties.  And you’ll see gorgeous over the top LEED-certified spectacles of the imagination that float alongside the fairways, every window placed just right to capture a view or hide one.

Boulder Address

Living in this part of town comes along with a Boulder address, but in truth you are in the county.  That’s important to remember when it comes to streets and services.  Children attend Boulder Valley Schools.  There are excellent resources within a five minute drive of the various neighborhoods.  Niwot is a picturesque little town to the north with a market and a great outdoor happy hour scene on Fridays.  There are some great eateries including one of my favorite spots to grab a pizza.  The Gunbarrel shopping district offers a full service King Soopers and a wide variety of shops in the plaza.  Everything from coffee and yoga to a full service gym.  There is even a Burger King.

Plenty of great dining, so you won’t feel the need to drive to downtown Boulder every time you get hungry!  But you can be downtown in fifteen minutes or less.  Or up to Longmont in twenty.  For those working at Crispin Porter or IBM or a variety of tech startups or even the Avery Brewing Company – this area of town is a great spot.

Boulder Country Club Home Prices

You can expect a single family home near the BCC to start over five hundred thousand.  With the impact of the Sellers’ Market in this region and an ever more popular lifestyle drawing more and more to Colorado, homes are topping out just under the $3 million dollar mark.  And of course, that ceiling is on target to be breached.  Views, lush yards looking out across green fairways to the Colorado Rockies, beautiful custom homes on winding laconic roads.  Its easy to imagine why this is such a wonderful area to call home.
