Street Eats Food Truck Festival

Party In The Park

Dining out on a budget in Boulder is fun, festive and at a park near you.  Be sure to enjoy the 2014 season of the Street Eats Food Truck Festival in Gunbarrel Park, located in Northeast Boulder aka Gunbarrel.  Featuring five fabulous food trucks back by popular demand from the 2013 season plus rotating desert trucks.

Street Eats Gain Popularity During Recession

Food trucks have a long history in the US.  The chuck wagon was the first official food truck and served areas like Colorado when cowboys and Indians roamed the land.  When the economy tanked in 2008, high end chefs across the country found themselves in need of work.  Food Truck festivals were a natural fit.  The trucks have low overhead and no fixed location costs.

Boulder Knows How To Throw A Food Truck Festival

food-truck-menuThe scene up in Gunbarrel Commons is booming and hip. For starters, the park is big and offers something for everyone.  Playground for the little ones, plenty of paths to explore, dogs are welcome and there is even a small creek running through the area.  The park is home to popular condo and town house communities such as Hunter Creek, Powderhorn, Willow Brook II condos and Habitat apartments.

Residents are encouraged to bring folding chairs.  The park has several picnic tables, though these fill up quickly.

Great food abounds at this food truck festival held on the first and third Wednesday of each month – weather permitting.  The Street Eats food fest runs May to October.

Street Eats Food Trucks

Heirloom serves some delectable food.  Its difficult to comprehend how one little truck can create such a wild variety of incredible offerings.   Take a look at this recent television interview and tell me you don’t get hungry for this year’s Food Truck Festival offerings!!  Visit on Facebook.

The tasterie serves grits and shrimp at food truck festival
Street Eats Food Truck Festival The Tasterie delivers with Shrimp, Sausage and Grits.

The Tasterie Truck. Delicious home cooked comfort food.  That about sums it up. Tuck into specialties such as Shrimp and Sausage Grits.   A rotating menu of delectable dishes.  Visit on Yelp.

All the food trucks, btw, are returning from last years Food Truck Festival.  The trucks are loyal to the community and the organizer is rewarding the trucks with renewed invites for 2014.  These trucks share quirky names and award winning fare.  You have to be a scrappy business person to survive without a physical address for diners to find you.

A cult like following is devoted to the bacon alone of Top of the Hill Grill West.  BBQ on wheels.  Oh yeah, this smoke shack delivers.  Enjoy the western outpost of the famed Top of the Hill Grill out of Brattleboro, Vermont.  Brisket, ribs, pork.  The french fries are hot, fresh and salty (one of my faves from a food truck). Reviewed on YELP here.

Comida’s bright pink Food Truck Festival truck is easy to spot. Can’t get enough? Check out the #BricksandMortar location in #Prospect New Town, Longmont, Colo

You can’t miss the hot pink Comida truck.  And unlike most competitors, this one also has a bricks and mortar location in Longmont and another in Denver. Savor the street tacos this place serves up.  Not too spicy, but rather loaded with flavor.  We fell in love with the truck offerings and then searched out the diner.   Great option at this year’s Street Eats Food Truck Festival.  Visit at their site here.

Two more food trucks rotate with desert only at the Gunbarrel Food Truck Festival.  Sweet Cow – which also offers brick and mortar locations in Louisville and Boulder as well as Waffle Cakes which I haven’t dined at yet.
