Superior Elementary School

All Parents Want The Best

We all want the best for our children and Superior Elementary School is an excellent opportunity for children to get a great start on their education. The school is well loved by parents in the Rock Creek neighborhood. What sets this school apart from others? Excellent teachers and a strong staff with longevity.

But it is more than that when it comes to the kids.  Superior Elementary School believes in immersing students right away. Kids frequently behave one way in front of parents, another when on their own. For Mom and Dad, it can feel like their child is getting into the deep end quickly. Yet the approach works great at SES where children in the Kindergarten program have an opportunity to build on their own individual identity.

My clients are quick to say, “we loved Superior Elementary.” The teachers and staff are very warm and welcoming. Oftentimes, parents and student alike still consider the kids kindergarten and first grade teachers among their all time favorites.

Self Reliance and Responsibility at Superior Elementary School

SES does have expectations that children learn to be self reliant and responsible for themselves and others. Part of this learning process is for parents. Mom and Dad need to be educated on letting go early.  So that their child can find a sense of comfort, confidence and safety in the school. It’s important to have this experience without parents hovering and being more of a distraction than a help.

True story from Illinois. My cousins sent their son off to his first day of First Grade. It was a big deal, he was riding the bus. After a tearful “goodbye” – more tears from Mom than anyone, Aaron was off to school. But then, my cousins noticed some parents were following the bus. So they hopped in their car and followed the bus to school too. All the parents were watching from the fence as their kids trooped inside.   That’s when my cousin’s heard a friend call call out, “Hey Aaron, are you ready for the first day of school” to which Aaron – my cousin’s son replied, “I am, but I don’t think my parents are.”

Alien as it might seem, parents not coming into the classroom in the beginning, in the long run this helps to make the transition easier for students and parents. Kids act way differently when parents aren’t around. Parents are often amazed at how independent their children are in a classroom in comparison to how dependent they were at home. It is in no way reflective of how welcome parents will be in the classroom.

Meet the Principal at Superior Elementary School

Another option is to call the principal, Jenn Bedford , and request an appointment to visit the year before your child arrives. Then you’ll be able to observe other children in the exact environment you’ll be sending your child off to. Says one of my clients, “When we first moved to Rock Creek, we were hearing great things about SES. So I set an appointment and met with the principal. And discovered for myself the elementary school is amazing.”

And consider attending an Open House. These are held in December and January. Its called “The Roundup.” Superior Elementary School offers these open houses for perspective parents’ of incoming students. Incoming Kindergarteners may attend and will do projects in the supervised classroom. Parents will join their children after a brief orientation.

For additional information, visit the website or call 720-561-4100 with any questions! School enrollment decisions are made early. So if visiting a school or attending an open house is important, remember these activities can occur in December, the year prior to your enrollment.

Safe and Secure Elementary School

Another parent says, “The teachers are all awesome across the board.” Parents will appreciate that The Superior Elementary School kindergarten rooms have an exterior exit right at the front of the school. No need for parents to even go inside after school. The teachers release the kiddos one by one to the waiting parents. Oftentimes, the families all congregate right outside the doors to the classrooms. You can’t go wrong with staying in the neighborhood for school!

Get Involved

I think SES gives parents a ton of opportunities to be in the classroom as volunteers, and you can see how the teachers interact with the kiddos in their native environment. I think you’ll be impressed! Just – and this can be tough for parents – be prepared to first let go, to let your child immerse him or herself in the experience of going off to school and being a big kid.

Remember, part of the school process is it should be the kids special place. So that your child feels ownership over it. One of my clients constantly tells me, “My kids always loved telling me about what happened in kindergarten, it is great to hear their perspectives and their pride in doing things by themselves.”
