Boulder Hiking
Boulder is a well named spot when you think of hiking and the outdoors. The town is filled with boulders and rocks and trails. Hey, I’m not kidding, it is a great place to get outdoors and enjoy a hike. Centennial Trailhead is a good place to start for beginners and those looking for an off the beaten path experience.

Centennial Trailhead

Located just across the street from the uber-popular Mount Sanitas hiking trail, Centennial Trailhead provides access to several great hikes. Looking for a quick jaunt and scrambling experience? Check out Red Rocks. Prefer an intense workout without the crowd? Then head up the Anemone Trail. Each of these is part of the Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks system.

Centennial Trailhead is located just west of 4th street on Mapleton. This is just before Mapleton turns into Sunshine Canyon, and a little above Boulder’s Knollwood subdivision. There is a parking area (25 cars), bathrooms and picnic table at the base of the trail. As you start up, you will quickly cross an irrigation ditch and moments later pass by some enclosed water supply gear for the City of Boulder. There are several great hiking options. Follow the Sunshine Trail for a hike along Sunshine Canyon, head over to Red Rocks or take one of Boulder’s best, but often overlooked trails, Anemone.
Anemone Trail

Anemone Trail is an out and back trail; you’ll gain just over 1,000 feet of elevation with excellent views. This is a less utilized trail in Boulder, so you’ll skip the crowds that flock to Sanitas across the valley.
James Dziezynski writes in Elevation Outdoors Magazine that, “The Anemone Trail is hiding in plain sight.” The trail is well marked and easy to follow. I did a small portion of it last week. Great views and amazing vistas in 180 degrees. On clear days, you will be able to spot Pikes Peak and Denver. This is a solid out and back hike for those looking for a good workout or an opportunity to enjoy peace and tranquility.
Boulder Red Rocks

Red Rocks is an awesome climbing area. Once you reach the rocks, scramble about, at your own risk, on these majestic spires. In years past, I took my son and his friends to adventure on the rocks. Ideal area for youngsters to fall in love with Boulder, especially as it less than a half mile from the car. Very accessible.
