Best Swimming Holes

Well, I’m not really certain there are any swimming holes around Boulder.   But it is a great term and with a gorgeous Spring day like the one we are enjoying, it is easy to imagine finding a great Boulder swimming hole.  And relaxing.  Summer is almost upon us, so here is my list of the best places to take a dip and cool off.

  1. Boulder Creek.  I guess this is the ultimate Boulder swimming hole.  With the Spring run-off and warm weather, this is the best spot to grab an inner tube or raft and have a blast.  Definitely ideal  for the twenty to thirty something crowd. The rapids are wild. This is a river, it runs fast and cold. But in spots, with the sun shining just right, it is perfect.  More like this here.
  2. Water World.  The thrill of the wild river, minus the “wild.”  Located about 25 minutes outside of Boulder, this is the ultimate man made swimming hole.  There is even a water slide that goes uphill. See the official site.
  3. Eldorado Springs.  The natural water provider also sports a one of a king natural swimming pool.

Better known for bottled water, Eldorado Springs also offers a great swimming hole
Located on the south side of Boulder, definitely a great place to cool off in the summer. Be sure to take extra gallon jugs – you can fill up for free at the Spring after your swim.
  4. Boulder Parks and Recreation provide several great swimming pools around town.  In the Fall, after Labor Day, some of the pools have Dog Days of Summer events.  My favorite is at Scott Carpenter Park.
  5. Glenwood Springs.  It is a drive, at about 3 1/2 hours west of Boulder along I-70.  The ultimate swimming hole in Colorado is the natural confluence of several rivers and an underground thermal hot springs.  Make a day of it or swing by after a day of skiing.
  6. Many communities in Boulder Colo offer swimming pools. There are two pools in Rock Creek, a popular subdivision just outside of Boulder.  And the soon to be developed Superior Town Center will boast two indoor swimming pools.
  7. The Louisville Recreation Center has a fantastic indoor swimming pool. There is also plenty of space to play and have fun at the North Boulder Rec Center’s pool.  In fact, most every rec center in the area boasts great swimming options.
  8. Realtor Bob Gordon and others running ouf of the Boulder Reservoir after taking the polar plunge 2014
That’s me in the back,. running out of the Boulder Reservoir. Polar Plunge 2014 is going to be great!
Just NE of town, you’ll find the Boulder Rez.  Great place to enjoy water sports and a swim in the summer time.  SE of Boulder is the Arvada Rez; it offers a limited number of boat permits for water skiing enthusiasts.  South of Denver are Chatfield Reservoir and Cherry Creek Reservoir.  Each is a great place to get away from the hustle of day to day life and relax on the water.

I have the best memories of visiting our eye doctor’s house once a summer for a swimming party.  There were always Ritz crackers and cheese.  They had a great peanut shaped swimming pool and you couldn’t see any neighbor’s homes.  I guess, for me, that is still the ultimate swimming hole, though I’m sure if I were to go back, the pool would seem awfully small today.  Are you seeking a home in a swimming community?
